Colorado Springs Veterans Day Parade
Colorado Springs,
2005-11-05 09:30:00 -
2005-11-05 12:00:00
- In 1999, a small group of patriotic volunteers formed a non profit organization to host an annual Colorado Springs Veterans’ Day Parade. Their mission is simple: To honor all veterans. To educate and inspire community awareness while paying tribute to the service and sacrifices all veterans have endured in the pursuit of freedom. In just this short time, the parade has grown to be one of the biggest and best in the United States. This has only been possible because of the work of hundreds of community volunteers and the generous financial support of the local business community which covers all the parade’s costs. They have rekindled a great tradition where veterans are enthusiastically cheered as they walk down Tejon Street in Colorado Springs. For that reason, and because we encourage participation by all veterans, including those who are not members of a formal organization, veterans come from all of southern Colorado to participate in the parade. In addition to presenting the parade, the board works diligently to educate children of all ages on the sacrifices our military veterans have made. We encourage kids to participate in or attend the parade as a way of saying thank you to our veterans. In 2004, over 600 Boy and Girl Scouts marched or assisted with the parade; seven high schools built patriotic floats for the parade and eight high school bands played a musical tribute to our veterans. they also had approximately 40,000 spectators at the parade; many of these were children with their families, so it appears their efforts to educate today’s youth are paying off.

Ouray Ice Festival
Ouray Ice Park,
2008-01-09 07:00:00 -
2008-01-13 15:00:00
- The Ouray Ice Festival, held each Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend in January, is an eclectic gathering of ice climbers, gear manufacturing exhibitors, and ice climbing voyeurs simply thrilled to watch at a safe distance from the precipitous edges. The festival was first held in January of 1996 and is promoted by ice climbing pioneer Jeff Lowe. The festival is now widely recognized as the premier gathering of its kind. Events over this incredible weekend include various climbing clinics from beginning to advanced, an opportunity to check out and try the latest and greatest gear and catch up with some of the world’s most famous and experienced climbers. During the Festival, we offer one of the best competition route’s that continues to challenge the best climbers in the world. Plus we are always adding or changing things up….be sure to check out the schedule of events for things like the ax throwing contest, tight rope walk across the gorge, and the mari ad of other festivitiess. The Festival isn’t just for climbers – we also have gear auctions, film and slide show presentations and we’ve added a Kids Climbing Wall away from the gorge to get the little tykes started off right. Over half of the annual operating capital needed to run the Ouray Ice Park is raised each year by the Ouray Ice Festival and it's corporate sponsors. As the Festival has grown so too has the Ice Park, and the relationship has directly resulted in the fine ice climbing venue that we are all able to enjoy each winter here in Ouray.

- Where wildlife meets wildlights! This annual holiday tradition will shine brighter than ever with added animal viewing opportunities, more than 35 brilliantly illuminated acres of lights and the opportunity for children to visit with Santa Clause. On the brink of a brand new year, children can also experience the fun of Zoo Year's Eve, a very wild New Year's Eve party that begins at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 31 with entertainment, activities and crafts that leads up to an early 9 p.m. countdown to the New Year! Denver Zoo guests can gather with friends, family and the community as the Denver Zoo celebrates the cultural tradition of Kwanzaa, a holiday tradition that honors African American heritage through African dance, music and education beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 26. Zoo Lights, wildlights at Denver Zoo runs from 5:00-9 p.m. nightly, including Zoo Year's Eve and Kwanza. This year's celebration will also feature the addition of multiple animated sculptures and elegantly-crafted animal ice carvings created by Santa's helpers with power tools. Festivities will also include carolers, instrumental groups, dancers and the Conservation Carousel. Warming stations throughout the zoo offer roasted chestnuts, hot chocolate, cider, soft bread pretzels and steamy cappuccino.

Electric Safari
Cheyenne Mountain Zoo,
2007-12-07 17:30:00 -
2008-01-01 21:00:00
- Electric Safari is the largest holiday light show in the Pikes Peak region. Nearly one million sparkling lights illuminate crisp winter nights, including nearly 40 animated light sculptures. Warming stations throughout the Zoo offer a reprieve from the winter night’s chill, as do select indoor animal exhibits that remain open during the event. And if you haven’t seen the city’s lights from the Zoo at night, you’re in for a double whammy of lighting! Santa and his elfin helpers can again be found in the “My Big Backyard” cabin handing out candy canes, posing for photos and taking gift “suggestions” from youngsters through Dec. 23 (closed Christmas eve). And again this season Santa will be joined by two of his very special reindeer-in-training. New this year is the advent of a specially decorated 20-foot Christmas tree, located next to Colobus Cafe just below Santa’s treehouse cabin. And adding to the nostalgic holiday feel, youngsters can hop up into the saddle and ride a pony around the giant Christmas pine (weather permitting, of course). The little ones can experience a ride on one of the Zoo’s trusty steeds for only $3 – and get a close-up view of the Zoo’s massive Christmas tree to boot! Many of the Zoo’s animal exhibits are open during Electric Safari, including the African Rift Valley indoor giraffe residence where guests can feed crackers to the largest giraffe herd of any zoo in the country. Asian Highlands (Siberian tigers and Amur leopards), Primate World (gorillas and orangutans), Aquatics (hippos), Monkey Pavilion and Lion’s Lair also remain open during Electric Safari. Electric Safari is the largest annual event hosted by the Zoo, attracting more than 30,000 visitors annually. It takes four Zoo horticulture staffers nearly three months to physically erect the displays, and an equal amount of time to dismantle the 60 acres of lights. Luckily, the Zoo has been able to count on the support of Colorado Springs Utilities employees, who have volunteered hundreds of hours each of the past 11 years helping to string lights.
